PRUHEALTH is offering customers the chance to prove an apple a day keepsthe doctor away by offering a discount to policyholders who buy healthy foodfrom Sainsbury’s.

In an exclusive deal with the supermarket giant, PruHealth customers will enjoylower medical insurance premiums by accruing Vitality points, based on theirweekly spend on fruit and vegetables up to a maximum of [pounds sterling]20.

PruHealth, a joint venture between South African insurer Discovery andPrudential, already cuts premiums for regular gym users and people who havehealth screening or join classes to quit smoking. Policyholders get points foreach activity.

Chief executive Shaun Matisonn said if customers build up enough points theycould get their annual cover, which costs about [pounds sterling]800, free.

‘We aim to help customers challenge their behaviour and substantially cut thecost of health cover,’ he said.

‘Sainsbury’s is very much aligned to what we do, with a focus on healthy eatingand healthy living.’

Filling foodie hearts with joy and pantries with goodies

At 7pm on a weeknight the lights are still on at Mercato essential food ingredient market.

In the demonstration kitchen, past the aisles of gourmet groceries, customers are watching store co-owner and chef Ngaire Baker make the perfect risotto, pasta or chocolate torte. Later they’ll be eating this fine fare from pristine white plates perched on their knees, then eagerly searching the shelves to find the ingredients to make the same dishes at home.

This is a successful retail recipe that has its origins in a warehouse in the backstreets of Sydenham. When Mercato opened in Cass St in 2004, the aim was to wholesale quality Spanish, French and Italian food ingredients to South Island chefs and selected retail outlets. There was a small showroom attached to the warehouse, but it was only big enough to display a handful of the 1500 products Mercato sells.

What Baker and her husband, co-owner Marty, didn’t anticipate was that soon Canterbury’s foodies would be on their doorstep, wanting to buy the same ingredients they were eating at restaurants. Mercato quickly became one of Christchurch’s “must visit” destinations for home gourmets wanting to source the correct ingredients for European- style food.

The Bakers soon discovered these foodies needed more than just supplies for their pantries. With no professional chef training, they were worried about “wrecking” the ingredients, so Ngaire decided to borrow a mobile kitchen and hold a cook school in the warehouse.

The cooking schools were quickly booked out, so in 2008 the couple began the search for new premises to better accommodate this side of the business.

In early 2010 Mercato moved to Fitzgerald Ave, where they have room for a permanent demonstration kitchen, a delicatessen and more retail space, as well as a warehouse. The larger retail space allows Mercato to sell more products, including New Zealand artisan foods such as Rachel Scott bread, Marino’s fresh chorizo sausages and Karikaas unsalted cultured butter. The artisans are encouraged to hold regular tastings.
